Joanne Hammond

January 21, 1931 — June 27, 2020

Joanne (Kinkley) Hammond, age 89 of Celina, Ohio‬, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 12:35 pm in Otterbein of St. Marys. She was born on January 21, 1931 to the late Brice & Gertrude (Wille) Kinkley in Van Wert, OH. On February 26, 1950 she married Paul Hammond, who preceded her in death on August 5, 2009.

Survivors include her children, Paula Hammond of Sheffield Lake, OH; Janice Hammond (Edward Hemmelgarn) of Shaker Heights, OH; Jon (Debra) Hammond of Phoenix, AZ; daughter-in-law Lori Wirth of Hillsboro, OH; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Joanne was preceded in death by son Steven Hammond, grandson Micah Hammond, her parents and her five siblings--Helen Kinkley, Don Kinkley, Mark Kinkley, Mary Peters, and Dorothy Fischer.

Joanne was a graduate of Celina High School and had worked at the Mercer County Engineer’s Office and at Citizens Commercial Bank. She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and enjoyed many card games, particularly bridge. She and Paul were avid members in the St. John camping group. This experience led the two to sell their home after retirement and live full time on the road in their fifth wheeler for several years, until eventually settling in Phoenix then returning to Celina.

Another key activity for Joanne through the decades was “The 49ers” or simply “The Girls Club”. She and fellow classmates from her Celina High School class maintained close ties through monthly meetings, sharing and processing life events over the years into their 80s (see story in the Daily Standard https://dailystandard.com/archive/2013-06-29/stories/21451/forever-friends ).
